Afghan Heroes
With over 210 soldiers killed in Afghanistan and MoD figures showing that in the month of July 2009 alone, there were 94 injuries associated with the war in Afghanistan, the time is right for a charity dedicated to the welfare of those directly involved in the conflict.

The mother of a soldier who died in an explosion in Afghanistan in July had the idea to set up a charity to provide support for those directly involved in the conflict.

Afghan Heroes has been launched by a group of mothers with the aim of helping our service personnel directly on the front line; the families of those who have fallen and our returning service personnel who have witnessed these horrific losses of their fellow comrades.

Afghan Heroes is independent of other charities in the UK. It deals specifically with members of the British forces and their families that have been affected by the military operations in Afghanistan now and into the future. The intention of the Afghan Heroes, is to operate until a minimum of five-years from the cessation of our military presence in Afghanistan.

Afghan Heroes will deliver support through:
1. The “thank the troops” initiative.
2. The provision of home comforts to those serving in Afghanistan.
3. Motivational and morale boosting support directly to our forces on the front line via your letters and news letters.
4. A support network for the families of the fallen, creating an open environment where families can give support to each other.
5. Supporting the many returning soldiers who have witnessed these horrific atrocities in the course of performing their duties.

Childline Children's Charity
ChildLine is the free helpline for children and young people in the UK. Children and young people can call us on 0800 11 11 to talk about any problem - our counsellors are always here to help you sort it out.

Since it was launched in 1986, ChildLine has saved children's lives, found refuges for children in danger on the streets, and given hope to thousands of children who believed no one else cared for them. ChildLine has now counselled well over one million children and young people.

Help For Heroes
Help for Heroes has become, in the words of the Prime Minister, a ‘National Institution’ and it is hard to believe it was only started this in October 2007. Since then they have raised £1 million a month to help support our wounded servicemen and women injured in the current conflicts.

This is not about politics, there's no need to criticise or complain, why moan about it being dark when you can light a candle? This is about ordinary decent people wanting to to do their bit to help, to raise money by joining in and so creating something that has become rather wonderful.

Over the last few weeks we have seen this support building into a a huge, unstoppable wave. The RFU hosted the Rugby Challenge Match at Twickenham and 52,000 of you cheered on the Rugby Legends and raised over £1.3m. A business man decided to do his bit and paid £1.5m to fly with the RAF’s Red Arrows. The finalists of Simon Cowell’s X Factor joined in and sung Hero which has become the fastest selling record of the decade. Even James Bond has signed up with over £500,000 raised for H4H and the Poppy appeal at the Royal Premier of Quantum of Solace.

There are thousands of events happening all over the country as people decide to show their support, people who are prepared to get on and do something, to light a candle in the dark. All of us at Help for Heroes are staggered by the support and would like to say thank you to all of you who have made this work..... Now keep going!

MABS - Cancer support group in Spain

The Group was founded in 1999 by five women (4 British and 1 Austrian), all of whom had had breast cancer. Originally named MARINA ALTA BREAST CANCER SUPPORT GROUP, their aim was to provide support to cancer patients and their families on the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol. News travelled fast and the medical profession was soon referring ALL types of cancers to the Group for support, so the name was changed to CANCER SUPPORT GROUP (MABS) to reflect this.

Nowzad Dogs
In Southern Afghanistan, where desert meets mountains, lies the small rural market town of Now Zad. Here during late 2006 a group of Royal Marines attempted to give shelter to several stray dogs. The choice of leaving them to fend for themselves was not an option, the dogs were scared, lonely and in a poor state of health. The dogs became the Marines' companions for the 3 months they spent in the small town facing the daily threat of attack.

An Afghan stray dogs life is not good at the best of times All the money that is donated goes directly towards helping the animals in need while raising awareness of the problems that homeless animals, (in war zones), can and do face.

The Nowzad Dogs charity was formed by supporters who believed in what those few Royal Marines had started back in that remote Afghan town. The charity continues to help those dogs, and other animals of Afghanistan that have no hope and nobody to care for them. We realise we cannot transport all of the stray dogs of Afghanistan to loving homes, but we will do our best to promote animal welfare and to assist in the vital animal aid work that is carried out by the small Afghan stray animal rescue.

Phil Packer
Help our wounded serviceman and women
Can you support Phil Packer to raise £1 million in support of Help for Heroes?

Major Phil Packer, was injured in an incident following a rocket attack in Basra on 19 Feb 2008. Sadly, as a result of the accident he lost the use of his legs and is now a paraplegic with what are classed as catastrophic injuries. He was originally told he would never walk again, however there have been positive improvements and it is his intent to walk the London Marathon on the 26th April this year over a two week period on crutches.

He continues to serve in the Army and until he returns to work, is determined to assist others and provide information on sport to the disabled community; he believes it is his responsibility to do so. He has also pledged to raise £1 million for Help for Heroes as Phil hopes to make a difference to fellow injured servicemen and women.

Phil needs support to make his quest a success. He is supported by family, friends, colleagues and those that hear about his story. To enthuse and inspire others, Phil has laid down the gauntlet for any challenges, events or sports to participate in, that will assist him in reaching his target. Amazingly, within a year of his injuries, he rowed the English Channel with Al Humphreys in just over fifteen hours.

SAT Animal Rescue
'Sociedad Protectora para Animales de Torrevieja' (or S.A.T) is a registered charity whose aim is to alleviate the local stray and abandoned dog problem. It was formed in 1992 by likeminded people and became registered in Valencia as Charity no: 3463. It is also registered with Torrevieja Town hall.

S.A.T was founded in 1992 by a group of people of all nationalities who saw the need for a sanctuary for the abandoned dogs that roamed the streets of Torrevieja. Today, with its kennels at Dolores which can home upto 70 dogs, it is still a multi-national organisation and a registered charity with the Valencian Community. Our aim is to prevent unnecessary suffering and rehome the many abandoned dogs within the Costa Blanca area. No longer do we only cover Torrevieja, we have cries for help from as far as Murcia and as far inland as Pinoso and Sax. Luckily for us, there are now more places like ours that take in abandoned animals and we can deal with the immediate problems in the Vega Baja area more readily.

We have a huge amount of volunteers who do just about anything to make the stay of our 'guests' at Dolores a happy one. Dog walkers, poo-picker-uppers, washing hanger-outers, shop workers, fundraisers and general all round helpers make Julia, the kennel manageress, a happy lady. She can always do with more help though and volunteers are also always needed to help in our shop at Guardamar, at the Sunday sales at San Luis and San Miguel, and to fundraise. The refuge at Dolores only caters for dogs but SAT helps other animals when necessary. We work closely with other charities and individuals dealing with many different types of animals so although we cannot house them we can advise as required.
