Care Directions
The internet's unique resource of empowering information for older people in the UK.

Care Directions - UK

Care options - knowing your rights, exercising your choice.

The majority of the population, both older and younger people, are able to lead healthy, active lives. However, for many people there comes a time when, either for themselves or for someone close to them, there is a critical need to know what is available in the way of care or living support and how it can be accessed – for short or long term needs.

In this situation people are often faced with very little choice. Often, they are told that a care home is the only option. A home may be an excellent choice for some people but, as this site will show, there are lots of other possibilities and options to think about.

Change 4 Life
These days, 'modern life' can mean that we're a lot less active. With so many opportunities to watch TV or play computer games, and with so much convenience and fast food available, we don't move about as much, or eat as well as we used to. Which means that 9 out of 10 kids today could grow up with dangerous amounts of fat in their bodies. This can cause life-threatening diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease - so it’s really important that we do something about it.

Change 4 Life - Good Health - UK

We all know it can be hard these days to live a happy, healthy life but Change4Life can help. After all, none of us are perfect. The way we live in modern society means a lot of us, especially our kids, have fallen into unhealthy habits. Even the best of us can make small changes.

Would you like loads of ideas and help to give your family a happier, healthier future? Then you already know why you should join Change4Life. As part of Change4Life, you will receive tons of helpful information, games, tools, tips and a free welcome pack. You can also search for what is happening in your local community. We’ll update the site all the time so don’t miss out – come back and see us regularly.

Where will I find Change4Life?  In a word - everywhere! Making a Change4Life is really important, so we're going to be talking to you through your telly, your radio, your parks, your local halls, your supermarkets, in your children's schools and, with any luck, in your home too. And that's just for starters!

Childline Children's Charity

Childline Children's Charity in the UK

ChildLine is the free helpline for children and young people in the UK. Children and young people can call us on 0800 11 11 to talk about any problem - our counsellors are always here to help you sort it out.

Since it was launched in 1986, ChildLine has saved children's lives, found refuges for children in danger on the streets, and given hope to thousands of children who believed no one else cared for them. ChildLine has now counselled well over one million children and young people.

ChildLine is the UK's free, 24-hour helpline for children in distress or danger. Trained volunteer counsellors comfort, advise and protect children and young people who may feel they have nowhere else to turn.

Almost 1,400 volunteers provide a counselling service, supervised by a team of professional supervisors and managers. Every day around 4,500 children call ChildLine, but lack of funds means that only 2,500 of them will get through to our counsellors for comfort, advice and protection.

Essential Health Ltd
Independent Healthcare Insurance Specialists
Based in the South of England, Essential Health reaches out to customers the world over.

Independent Healthcare Insurance Specialists - UK and Spain

Originally focusing on medical benefits for individuals and corporations, our business approach has moved to a more holistic view when considering health insurance for our customers.
Long gone are the days of one policy covering all aspects of need, today we live a more demanding lifestyle and require the same from our insurances. Looking at both the financial consequences of ill health as well as the point of need can often make the difference for many. It’s great to be able to pay the private consultants’ bills, but no good if you can’t afford to pay the household bills as a result.

As your needs change throughout your lifetime, so does the need of protection insurance, so we often recommend a more flexible approach, allowing customers to adjust and review dependant upon their needs and budget.

Great Ormond Street Hospital

Great Ormond Street Hospital in the UK

Great Ormond Street Hospital treats more than 90,000 patients each year - children who are suffering from the rarest, most complex and often life-threatening conditions. They receive the best medical care that money can buy, but the NHS funding cannot meet these ever-rising costs, and that's where the hospital's charity, GOSHCC, steps in.

GOSH - the Hospital - GOSH offers the widest range of paediatric specialties under one roof in Britain, and pioneers new treatments and drugs through its research body, the Institute of Child Health. Come on our hospital tour, or find out more about the Hospital's inspiring work at www.gosh.nhs.uk

Great Ormond Street Hospital is the largest paediatric research and training centre in Britain. All areas of the hospital take part in research, including a particular focus on research by nurses and professionals allied to medicine.

Among their many achievements, our researchers have devised mini-bone marrow transplants for children too sick to have a full-blown BMT, the development of a hepatitis C vaccine and ground-breaking gene therapy trials. New drugs have been pioneered for the treatment of epilepsy, arthritis and HIV, while new techniques for cardiac surgery have made it safer and more effective.
Family accommodation

Great Ormond Street houses 1,000 parents each week on site. It aims to give a bed for the night to one parent of every inpatient, and both parents of intensive care patients. Number 3, Powis Place, was recently purchased for £350,000 to house parents of children in the Intensive Care Unit.

Help For Heroes
Help for Heroes has become, in the words of the Prime Minister, a ‘National Institution’ and it is hard to believe it was only started this in October 2007. Since then they have raised £1 million a month to help support our wounded servicemen and women injured in the current conflicts.

Help For Heroes - UK

This is not about politics, there's no need to criticise or complain, why moan about it being dark when you can light a candle? This is about ordinary decent people wanting to to do their bit to help, to raise money by joining in and so creating something that has become rather wonderful.

Over the last few weeks we have seen this support building into a a huge, unstoppable wave. The RFU hosted the Rugby Challenge Match at Twickenham and 52,000 of you cheered on the Rugby Legends and raised over £1.3m. A business man decided to do his bit and paid £1.5m to fly with the RAF’s Red Arrows. The finalists of Simon Cowell’s X Factor joined in and sung Hero which has become the fastest selling record of the decade. Even James Bond has signed up with over £500,000 raised for H4H and the Poppy appeal at the Royal Premier of Quantum of Solace.

There are thousands of events happening all over the country as people decide to show their support, people who are prepared to get on and do something, to light a candle in the dark. All of us at Help for Heroes are staggered by the support and would like to say thank you to all of you who have made this work..... Now keep going!

MABS - Cancer support group in Spain

MABS - Cancer support group in Spain

The Group was founded in 1999 by five women (4 British and 1 Austrian), all of whom had had breast cancer. Originally named MARINA ALTA BREAST CANCER SUPPORT GROUP, their aim was to provide support to cancer patients and their families on the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol. News travelled fast and the medical profession was soon referring ALL types of cancers to the Group for support, so the name was changed to CANCER SUPPORT GROUP (MABS) to reflect this.

Phil Packer
Help our wounded serviceman and women
Can you support Phil Packer to raise £1 million in support of Help for Heroes?

Major Phil Packer, was injured in an incident following a rocket attack in Basra on 19 Feb 2008. Sadly, as a result of the accident he lost the use of his legs and is now a paraplegic with what are classed as catastrophic injuries. He was originally told he would never walk again, however there have been positive improvements and it is his intent to walk the London Marathon on the 26th April this year over a two week period on crutches.

He continues to serve in the Army and until he returns to work, is determined to assist others and provide information on sport to the disabled community; he believes it is his responsibility to do so. He has also pledged to raise £1 million for Help for Heroes as Phil hopes to make a difference to fellow injured servicemen and women.

Phil needs support to make his quest a success. He is supported by family, friends, colleagues and those that hear about his story. To enthuse and inspire others, Phil has laid down the gauntlet for any challenges, events or sports to participate in, that will assist him in reaching his target. Amazingly, within a year of his injuries, he rowed the English Channel with Al Humphreys in just over fifteen hours.

Phil rowing the English Channel with Al Humphreys on the 14th February 2009

How can you help?
Phil also has a website called www.philpacker.com which is becoming something of a focal point for inspiration and support for others and is a selfless quest. If you can give a donation through his secure website and spread the word, then you will join others that are showing their support for this remarkable man. Your support will show that people do believe in what he is trying to achieve.

If you want to donate to Phil’s £1Million quest, his secure link is on the following website page : www.justgiving.com/philsmillion or details for sending a cheque can be found on his contact page. This is really all about him gaining support nationally and us spreading the word; if you can help in any way, it will be sincerely appreciated and will assist in his unique journey to benefit others.

Whilst Phil is walking his 52,400 steps over 13 days on his inspirational quest to complete the 2009 Flora London Marathon, your support to help Phil could really make his dream £1million for Help for Heroes happen.
